I have been asked this question by juniors several times these days, and I decided this would be a useful theme for this week's Tips for students. First of all, if you are asking this question or thinking about getting an internship during Covid19, congratulations! You have stepped up and are little closer to your destination.
Now, things to do :
(A) Follow Lawctopus and similar websites :
Lawctopus is the best website for updated posts on any Internship programs, webinars, Moot court competitions, essay competitions and much more. Check this website at least once in three days. I have bagged two Internships and participated in more than three essay competitions through this site. Also read Internship experiences shared by your peers. They throw light on how they applied and got the Internship to what was the work done, the pros and cons. Link : www.lawctopus.com
(B) Like and follow the law firms' page/website you wish to work for :
All of us dream and wish to work for that one firm/organization/ NGO or Law office, which is likely to be difficult to get into. But, it's important to follow them because, you want to be amongst first people to apply for a position when they post about it. Dream high, work on it and keep faith.
(C) "Internet - Yahan sab kuch milega , lekin tumhe kya chahiye?" :
Of course you socialise, work and learn through Internet these days. Do a little more by simply searching on Google about 'Internship opportunities for law students'. You will be mesmerized by the results. There are so many organisations, firms offering online/ virtual internships which is a great way of earning a legit certificate and learning beyond syllabus. It's the golden opportunity to work beyond your reach as in, I live in Karnataka but I am working for a firm in Haryana, also got offers from a Delhi firm for next month. If it wasn't online Internship, I couldn't have done both of these, covid or not ! Therefore, make use of the opportunity, learn and earn.
(D) Take your mentor's help :
If you don't have one, feel free to DM us. When you have a doubt regarding what to write in your cover letter, statement of purpose or be it the format of your Resume/CV, don't hesitate to ask for help. Being perfectionist doesn't mean doing all by yourself. You are in the starting stage of your career, you have a lot to learn. Double check everything before applying for the post, ask mentors for the feedback.
(E) Be patient and don't stop after applying for one:
I suggest you to apply for at least five or more at a time before you relax and sit back. Wait for their reply, if you got one among them, congratulations! And if you didn't, analyse what you did wrong. Rewrite and apply for others. Don't stop until you land one Internship. I heard there are some websites, which doesn't let you post your resume, instead you have to fill the form given there. It is quite difficult to portray your full potential there but not impossible. Learn to write effectively, and fill those forms creatively.
